What Does it Take to Become a Fashion Stylist?!

Ever wondered about a career in fashion styling? Are you passionate about helping others express their unique style? Do you thrive in social settings? If so, keep reading, as I’m about to address some of the most common questions about my profession as a fashion stylist and how you can embark on your own styling journey!

What Are the Different Types of Styling?

  • Personal Styling: Personal stylists typically work with private clients. They shop for them, create lookbooks, assist with packing for trips, and help curate and organize their closets. Most personal stylists have the flexibility to set their own schedules.
  • Editorial Styling: This type of styling involves working on set with models, hair and makeup professionals, and other creatives representing a brand. Editorial stylists may use provided clothing or source wardrobe pieces for models. However, be prepared for long hours, as your schedule is often dictated by the company you’re working with.
  • Celebrity Styling: Celebrity stylists work exclusively for specific celebrities. They often travel with their clients, dressing them for various events, from red carpet appearances to press meetings. The hours in this line of work can be highly variable, and it may include being on call 24/7.

What Are the Five Essential Skills for All Stylists?

  1. Networking Skills: Building a client base and establishing strong relationships with brands and stores are crucial. Additionally, connecting with other creatives like tailors, hair and makeup artists, and photographers is vital for a successful career.
  2. Staying Current: To excel as a fashion stylist, staying up-to-date with the latest fashion trends is essential.
  3. Communication Skills: This skill tops the list in importance. Stylists often interact with diverse personalities, so effective communication is key to building successful client-stylist relationships.
  4. A Keen Eye: While this skill can develop over time, having some artistic ability is essential to kickstart your career as a fashion stylist.
  5. Organizational Skills: Fashion stylists manage multiple clients with varying aesthetics. It’s crucial to keep track of each client’s clothing, accessories, body types, colors, and preferences, all while staying on top of paperwork.
