Hi!
I’ve been reading your blog for about a month now, and I find it incredibly informative! I’m a girl who has always loved style, but I feel like I end up with none because of budget. At least I get to dress my daughter well, since her clothes are far less expensive!
Anywho, here’s my question. I am a graphic designer, and previously I worked in an ad agency, but the dress code was pretty much no pajamas. So I live in jeans. I have a few interviews coming up, most for business casual atmospheres, but the one that scares me is a position that is business dress. As a creative, how do I properly dress, yet still show the creative side–on a budget? How “safe” should I play the interview, should I get selected?
My last part to this, is that the interview is in Boston. I’m not overly familiar with how to dress for commuting and walking, do you have any insite? Do people bring their dress shoes? I can’t imagine walking around in my heels to get to work every day, but I don’t want to be the only dork on the block!

Dear ADG,
Thanks for reading, and thanks for the question.
For “creative business attire” I would stick with more conservative pieces.
blazer
dress pants
pencil skirt
sweater
Because you are in a creative industry, add a mixture of fun colors and patterns.
For example a Polka Dot Cardigan, with a complimentary colored top that has a little texture. Then you add a basic (safe) pair of pants. Or try a classic pencil skirt paired with a patterned top and purple accessories!
As for walking in to the interview in Boston.. .
If you can’t do a kitten heel, then these “City Flats” from the Gap are perfect. They slide into a small bag that you can place in your purse when you arrive at the interview/work.
Another AWESOME place to find “business creative” is the Merona Collection at Target.
A good rule of thumb for anyone that isn’t sure how to dress. I always say dress-up you”ll be a lot more comfortable too dressy then too casual!
Hope this helps!!
xoxo,
Jennifer
