Wardrobe staples These are the basic pieces every woman needs in her wardrobe. These are the building blocks of your wardrobe. They should be good quality, fit properly and be classic pieces. The pieces I think are essential are: black slacks, darker wash jeans with no holes or distressed places, white button down shirt, black cardigan, black blazer, little black dress, black skirt and black leggings.
Obviously, I like black. Not just for the fact that it tends to be slimming. If you have a black blazer, you can get a less expensive top in the season’s hot color and add a pair of jeans or slacks or a skirt. A black cardigan can go over anything!

Pops of color: These are the items that you can spend less money on and have some fun with. If yellow is hot this year, get a few yellow pieces to mix back to your staples. Get a honeysuckle pink (Pantone color of the year!) colored dress but add your black cardi and leggings. Or, add an aqua scarf to your little black dress!

Foundations: The older I get, the more important foundation pieces become. It’s true for all sizes, but especially for us larger gals. I think that scene in Bridget Jone’s Diary where she debates whether she should wear the “stomach holding in panties” or not is hilarious…because it’s so true! My theory is, wear them when you have to…but buy them at least a size larger than you need. Wearing too tight Spanx is no way to go through your day. Slips are so important and no one wears them anymore. Trust me, your rear end looks so much better in a skirt or dress when you have a slip on.
At the very least, get a bra that fits. I saw a picture of myself taken from the side on vacation last year and had a huge wakeup call….My bra was not giving me the lift I needed. ( I have since remedied the situation.) I also know how important it is to wear pretty undergarments sometimes…even if just for yourself. The lingerie industry has really stepped up here, there are tons of pretty panties and bras that are supportive and comfortable. I actually have the lavender Avenue set shown here and it’s very comfortable and pretty.
